Thieving sods!

An important note to our bowling friends from other clubs:
Firstly, thank you all for your words of support.  Now we have assessed the damage we are happy that we will be able to use use four rinks in one direction, and five or six (at a push) in the other direction.
We will be able to fulfil all our fixtures at Highworth this season.

This was the sight that greeted us on Monday morning after thieves attempted to steal part of our bowling green.
The damage was done late on Sunday night, or in the early hours of Monday the 28th May.
Certainly not just a case of random vandalism, this was a concerted attempt to remove a substantial area of turf.

Green Damage

With the already-dry grass bowling surface resting on a sandy soil bed, the thieves found the turf difficult to roll up, leaving behind many pieces that had simply broken up. In some areas it looks like they had more luck. Trails of dirt were left down the green and across the car park to where we assume a van, pickup or lorry was waiting.

Repairs are underway already, but the new areas of turf will not be playable for about two months.

If you know of any newly-turfed gardens with an unusually fine grass surface – do let us know!

Anyone with information should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, where information can be left anonymously if preferred, on 0800 555 111.
