Despite trailing from the outset, Highworth Pigeons didn’t get into a flap in their Swindon & District All Pins Consolation Semi-Final with West End at Queenstown Social last night.
Faced with an eight-point deficit and their last 3 players to play, Highworth couldn’t make any inroads on that deficit during the first round. With West End playing first, the Pigeons always knew what they had to do and were encouraged in the second round to see West End achieve a low scoring 12 between their three players.
Jim, Hill, Hugh Linning and John Jordan, with the pressure on and it all to do, turned in a 21, including a full 9-point haul for Hugh, who went on to have the highest individual aggregate in the Highworth side, to give the Pigeons a one point lead going into the final round.
In the final round, West End’s first two players responded to their team’s change of fortune and amassed 15, only to see their anchor man shoot a single for the second round running. With 16 needed to win, the Pigeons’ response didn’t get off to the best of starts with Jim turning in a two. Hugh then added a seven to leave John Jordan needing to score seven himself. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and John downed 8 pins to give the Pigeons a 199 – 197 overall victory.
The Pigeons can now look forward to the final, which will be held on Friday April 13th. Opponents and venue to be announced.
