The County play-offs for the Ladies’ National 4-Wood competition were played out at a hot & sticky Holt on Saturday 30th June, with Linda Young needing to win two games, not only to make the county final, but also qualify for the National finals at Leamington.
In the last 8, Linda found herself up against Janice Bull (Amesbury) and started well, building up an 11-5 lead and moving on 17-10 before Janice staged a fightback. The next four ends all went Janice’s way, with scores of 2, 3, 4 and 1 to leave Linda 17-20 down and one shot from going out. Linda however rose to the challenge and took singles on each of the next four ends to win 21-20 and move on to the semis.
Linda’s semi against Kathryn Yeoman of Box was no less tense. On an extremely fast rink, Linda got her nose in front early going 7-5 up, progressing to 17-9 and then edging forward to 20-12 before, as her quarter-final, Linda found her opponent fighting back. Kathryn then added 3, 1, 1 to get back to 17-20 down. At the next end there was controversy, as a dispute over the scorecard halted play midway through whilst the issue was resolved. Everything was found to be in order, but Linda’s concentration was thrown and conceded a 3 to bring the scores level at 20-20 and make it a single-end shoot-out. The County final will be held at Avon on Saturday 28th July, where Linda will face Lucy Smith of Wootton Bassett.
