Joanna Hicks’ & Linda Young’s National Pairs adventure will continue on Friday having today overcome opponents from Kent & Huntingdonshire 19-16 and 29-9 in the first and second rounds respectively.
In the morning’s first round, the Highworth pair got off to a good start and were 9-4 up after six ends and then exchanged singles at each of the next six ends before conceding two threes to fall behind 11-13 after 14 ends. This was a wake-up call for Jo and Linda who responded with two twos to take the lead back and despite Kent drawing level two ends later, a terrific three at the 19th end, followed by a single apiece saw Jo & Linda book an afternoon second round appointment.
Come the second round, Jo and Linda were fastest out of the blocks and certainly had the four-ce with them, scoring four, three, four, four and four again whilst conceding only four shots over the first eight ends to be 19-4 up. Having a 15-shot lead and bowling well the score stood at 23-9 after the 14th end. Following a single at the 15th, end 16 saw both pairs having a toucher each in the ditch along with the jack and, with the exception of one dead bowl, all other bowls were close to the end of the rink and Highworth took a single to move the score on to 25-9. Two singles and a three followed and allowed Jo and Linda to close out the match 29-9 with two ends to spare.
A last 16 match with a pair from Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire awaits on Friday morning, 9:30a.m., the Lincolnshire pair beating a pair from Middlesex 24-9 in their second round tie.
