Saturday 20th October – Highworth’s annual indoor friendly at Swindon Cheney Manor didn’t go the way it had in previous years, with the Highworth team pulling out all the stops and surprising their opponents, who had been unbeaten at home over the past two years. Highworth led from very early on in the contest and when the teams broke for refreshments at the half way point, there was an 18-point lead in place. Fears that the break would herald a change in fortunes for the home side looked justified as a fightback began immediately on resumption. However, the Highworth ship stabilized and the margin kept to double figures, Highworth coming home 70 – 58 winners.
David Murray’s rinks were the stars in a solid team performance, winning by eleven shots, although they did blot their copybook by dropping a five at the final end! The other two winning rinks had contrasting fortunes at the start of their matches but both edged home with two shot victories, whilst the only losing rink, came close to defeating the opposition’s strongest rink on the day.

Next year’s match promises to be interesting. To be sure, our opponents will be looking for revenge!
