Friday Afternoon Triples League

Congratulations to Team H who maintained their strong form with a final points tally of 23 to win the League and take the Champions Trophy.

Teams C and G were level on 16 points going into the final match but unfortunately for them they both lost so the runners up position was decided on points difference and Team G just managed to pip Team C at the post with a single point in it.

Team G

Team C

Well done to all the Teams for their efforts throughout the season and thank you to all the stand ins who supported the Teams when called on.  Special Thanks to Ashlee Lin who covered 11 of the 14 matches for various teams.

Finals Weekend 2023

Many thanks all those of you who contributed to an excellent Finals Weekend.

A considerable number helped man the bar, prepare the green and cook the bacon butties, (thanks to Maggie as always for taking the lead on keeping members fed and watered.)

Special thanks to Neil Biles for his tireless efforts, Umpiring for Friday evening and all-day Saturday and Sunday, and similarly to our President Gordon Pearce who was in attendance throughout offering support and presenting trophies.

It was great to have Martin Biles of MB Carpentry present, along with representatives of A-Plan and David and Val from Hilliers, who all presented trophies to various winners.

The weekend would not have been the same without the many members who found time to pop in at some point to cheer on friends and club mates, special thanks to those such as Josie who were present throughout.

Thanks also to Brian for taking lots of photos, some of which should appear on the website soon, to the green team led by Shaun and Kevin for preparing such an excellent surface and to unsung heroes such as Colin for ensuring we were weed free!

All of our markers did a great job with Chris Biles marking 3 and Deanne managing 4 games over the weekend.

Congratulations to all of our finalists, for the record the winners were;

The Charlie Shepherd Challenge

Not played since 2016 it was great to restart the Annual Challenge match between Highworth and Stratton Churchways.

Six rinks took battle over 18 ends and after some great play from home and away it was Stratton who retained the Challenge winning on 4 of the rinks.

After the hosts provided a lovely buffet tea and Highworth look forward to welcoming Stratton next year.

Club Day – Enjoyed by All

On a thankfully bright Sunday, in stark contrast to the forecast, over 30 members met for a fun afternoon of bowls.

Members played three, 7 end games, being drawn each time into different teams, rinks and playing positions.

Each player kept their own score, with only team shots for counting for their final total. After 21 ends, which flew by, Mick Woolmer had amassed 40 shots, winning by a margin of 13 over second place Neil Biles.

Members then adjourned to the clubhouse to continue their social drinking and to partake of the raffle and American Buffet.

The day raised over £200 for the club but more importantly members enjoyed each others company and got to know each other a little bit more.

Many thanks to Christine and Neil for arranging the day and to

those that helped them make it a success.

There are plans for another in August and a very different event in September so keep a look out for the info on these.

A-Plan take to the Green

On Tuesday 28th June, one of our sponsors, A-Plan brought 18 staff down, from both their Swindon and Carterton offices, to have a go at bowls.

After some basic instruction a challenge match took place between the two offices, two rinks of two ball triples.

Much laughter and friendly banter ensued before Carteton came out on top (they did have a bowler amongst their number).

There followed pizza and a few pints and a desire to come back and play some more in the near future.

Womens Institute visit Highworth Bowls Club

On Wednesday 28th June the club was visited by 4 members of the Highworth afternoon Womens Institute Group, to have a go at bowls.

Neil and Christine Biles took them through the basics and the ladies were soon getting close to the jack.

In true WI fashion the afternoon ended with Tea and Biscuits.
